HARTSVILLE, S.C. – On Monday, Jan. 18, 2016, more than 400 Coker College students-athletes made their way out into the Hartsville community and participated in the fifth annual Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service.

Student-athletes from all Coker teams participated in 24 community service projects throughout the Hartsville and Pee Dee area. Projects ranged from golf course clean up at Hartsville Country Club, to playing games and activities with nursery kids at the Hartsville YMCA.

“This is my third year partaking in the MLK day of service and every year I am amazed at the impact we have on the community and it is unbelievably rewarding for all of us,” said women’s lacrosse player Marabeth Durden, whose team participated in activities at the Morningside Assisted Living Center. “Going there was so enjoyable because we were able to make their day and give them great company.”

Coker College Vice President of Athletics and Facilities, Dr. Lynn Griffin has seen that connection between Hartsville community and Coker grow because of events like this one.

“The Martin Luther King Day of Service is something that everyone on campus really looks forward,” said Griffin.“ “This is our fifth year participating in such a great cause that not only honors Dr. King, but connects the Coker community with the Hartsville community.”
