Cobras Fall in Four to Anderson (S.C.) on Saturday

HARTSVILLE, S.C. - The Coker University volleyball team dropped its South Atlantic Conference match to visiting Anderson University (S.C.) on Saturday (Sept. 14) by a score of 3-1. 

Anderson took the opening set 25-14 behind some momentum generated late in the set. The two teams played to a 4-4 tie before finding themselves tied again at 10. Anderson would out-score Coker 15-4 from that point to take the opening set. 

Coker rebounded by taking the second set 25-22 to even the match at one. Again finding themselves in a 10-10 tie, the two teams would battle it out from there before the Cobras captured the momentum swing part way through the set. A 7-2 Coker run left the Cobras up 17-12, before the lead was trimmed to five at 19-14. A blocked attack from Taylor du Bray and Chelsey Blume followed by a du Bray kill polished off the second set. 

Anderson would take the third set by a mirrored score of 25-22 to take a 2-1 lead in the match. Coker led 7-4 and then 8-5 early before the teams would battle to a 10-10 tie. Anderson would re-gain the momentum to extend its lead to three and then four, before Coker would close the gap back to a difference of three. Anderson would finish off the third set with a kill from Maya Learmonth. 

 Anderson would seal the win in the match with 25-17 victory in the fourth set. Anderson rolled early on in the set, jumping out to an 8-1 lead before Coker called a timeout. Anderson would continue to score in bunches eventually stretching its lead to 19-10. Coker would re-gain some life going on a run to get within eight, before Learmonth finished off the match with another kill. 

 Coker hit .097 on the afternoon, totaling 41 kills. Emily Everton was the lone Cobra with double-digit kills (10), while Olivia Cerick finished with nine and du Bray finished with eight. Blume totaled seven kills on the day, while Carson Fuller also added six. With her performance on the day, du Bray moves into sole possession of sixth place on the all-time career kills list, bringing her career total to 822 and passing Selena Davis (815, 2001-04). Ashley Carson led the team with 22 assists on the afternoon, while Rami Mullen registered 12 and Cerick and du Bray also added one assist each. Cerick posted a team-high 17 digs in the match, while Everton and Camryn Tate each posted 13. The Cobras also got seven digs from Carson, five from Mullen and one each from Gabrielle Milo, du Bray, Fuller and Payton Jackson. Fuller led the effort with four block assists in the match, while Blume contributed three. Du Bray and Jackson each had two, while Alexis Kopicki, Cerick and Everton each had one. 

The Cobras (3-2, 1-1 SAC) are back in action at No. 24 Wingate on Tuesday (Sept. 20) in South Atlantic Conference action. First serve is set for 7:00 p.m.
