Du Bray Leads Cobras in 3-0 Sweep of Newberry

NEWBERRY, S.C. -- The Coker College women's volleyball team picked up an important South Atlantic Conference victory, beating Newberry 3-0 (25-20, 25-23, 25-19) on Friday (Oct. 26).

Taylor du Bray had her most efficient performance of the season, recording a double-double with 17 kills, and 11 digs, while hitting an eye-popping .536. The Cobras hit .356 as a team, easily their best percentage on the season.

Coker gained control of the first set with a 5-2 run thanks to a pair of early kills by Lana Strejcek. The freshman finished the night with nine kills and a .562 hit percentage. The Wolves remained in striking distance for most of the match, until a kill from Strejcek, followed by a Strejcek ace, and then a Rami Mullen kill put Coker ahead for good.

The second set was a back and forth affair that included 11 ties and seven lead changes. The Cobras took an early 6-1 lead behind consecutive kills from Olivia Veith. Veith totaled 10 kills with a .471 hit percentage for the match. Newberry stormed back to take a 12-11 lead, and even led as late as 21-20 before the Cobras took control of the set. Du Bray delivered a pair of knock out punches to put Coker ahead 23-21, and then Veith and Strejcek finished the set with kills, giving the Cobras a 25-23 set win, and 2-0 lead.

The third set was an absolutely dominating performance from du Bray. The junior recorded 10 of her 17 kills in the set, including the Cobras final two points. Mullen starred in the set as well, notching 14 assists. She'd finish the match with her 18th double-double, amassing 45 assists and 11 digs. The freshman is just 251 assists from Coker's all-time single-season record, while du Bray is just 15 kills shy of breaking her own single-season kills record.

The Cobras will be back in action on Sunday (Oct. 28) when they host Mars Hill in the DeLoach Center. Game time is set for 2:00 p.m.
