Cobras Sweep Saturday Tri-Match

MOUNT OLIVE, N. C. – The Coker College women's volleyball team finished 2-0 Saturday (Oct. 22) defeating non-conference foes Virginia State 3-1 and Mount Olive 3-2.

In the opening match of the day, the Cobras rallied and won three-straight sets after dropping the first set to Virginia State. Coker led 22-15 late in the second set when they strung together four consecutive points to even the match at one set a piece. Madison Bingle played an important role during the scoring streak recording three service aces.

The third set was similar to the second set as Coker steadily built a lead until Christen Bragg collected a service ace and Mount Olive committed an attack error for the 25-18 victory.

Next, the Cobras earned a hard-fought 28-26 fourth set victory to conclude the match. Notched up at 26 a piece, Christen Bragg and Arianne Jewell rose to the occasion by belting kills for the final two points.

In the final match of the evening, it was the Cobras coming out victorious once again, this time with a 3-2 victory over Mount Olive. Both the Cobras and Trojans captured two set victories before Coker earned a thrilling 15-13 fifth set win.

The Cobras opened the fifth set strong and held a comfortable 13-7 lead. However, the Trojans stormed back with five consecutive points and trimmed Coker's lead to 13-12. Next, the Cobras and Trojans exchanged points for a 14-13 Cobra advantage. Regan Kennen delivered the final point off a clutch kill for the match victory.

The Cobras used a complete team effort on the offensive side of the ball in the victory over Mount Olive, as three players tallied double-digit kills. Christen Bragg led Coker with 11 kills, while Alexis Berles and Megan Hardy added 10 kills each.

On the defensive end, Kara Overholt led the way with 23 digs and Arianne Jewell accumulated four total blocks.

The Cobras will be back in action this coming Tuesday (Oct. 25) when they return to the DeLoach Center for a SAC match against Catawba.
