Kaylah Ruff Wins Individual Championship, New Records Set at SAC Indoor Championships

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C.- The Coker College women's track and field team took on a day full of events at the South Atlantic Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships in Winston-Salem, N.C. on Monday (Feb. 19) and competed very well. Behind four new program records set on the day, Coker finished fourth out of 11 teams. 

Breanna Sullivan, Autumn Walters, Lisa Foster and Chauntress Like challenged themselves in the women's distance medley relay and placed sixth overall in the time of 13:22.11. This time sets a new program record for the event.

Talicia Murphy, Asante Rice and Deonzha Jackson all took on the women's long jump and finished with distances of 5.08m, 4.96m and 4.84m respectively. Murphy placed inside the top-10 in eighth, while Rice and Jackson finished 13th and 14th.

Next in the shot put, Tamara McMichael improved on her previous throws, securing a new top Coker record. McMichael the senior launched a distance of 10.15 meters to become the new record holder and place 11th overall. Caterra Barkins and Tiffany Taylor also placed inside the top-20 in 14th and 18th overall. Barkins takes over the third-best distance in the record book with a distance of 9.75 meters, and Taylor fifth all-time with a mark of 9.29 meters.

Coker secured 22 points in the 60-meter hurdles where three Cobras finished inside the top-five, with a one-two finish from Kaylah Ruff and Deonzha Jackson. Ruff and Jackson will also move to the top of the Coker record book for their efforts. Ruff ran a 9.00 and Jackson a 9.13 to sit atop the leaderboard. Asante Rice finished fifth in 9.33 seconds, placing her tied for sixth overall all-time.

Noelia Leake took charge in the 200-meter, setting a new program record with a time of 25.74 seconds, finishing fourth overall, securing five points. Autumn Walters also ran, placing 10th overall in 26.62 seconds.

Leake took third place overall in the 60-meter dash with a time of 7.71, putting her second all-time in Coker history, behind her own record of 7.70.

In the 400-meter race, Jalecia Williamson picked up a point for Coker, placing eighth in the time of 1:01.95, good for fourth all-time as a Cobra. Angel Gale also raced and finished in 10th in the time of 1:02.35 to sit in sixth all-time.

In the high jump, Charity Snelling brought home a tied-for-third place finish with a distance of 1.57 meters, which puts her tied for second all-time at Coker. Snelling's jump also awarded the Cobras 5.5 points on the day.

The Coker College women's track and field team will next compete at the UNCW Seahawk Invitational in Wilmington, N.C. on Friday and Saturday March 9-10. Results from the competition can be found by visiting www.cokercobras.com.
