Coker’s Lott Ready for Historic Run at NCAA DII Track & Field Championships

HARTSVILLE, S.C. – Coker College women's track and field member Darroneshia Lott is ready to make a historic run at the 2017 NCAA Division II Outdoor Track and Field National Championships in the 800-meter run. Lott, a native of Pensacola, Fla., is the first member in Coker track & field history to qualify for the NCAA Championships.

When asked about what it means to be the first member of the Coker track & field team to qualify for the NCAA DII Outdoor Track & Field Championships, Lott said, "It means a lot to be the first member of the Coker track & field team to qualify for nationals. I believe by participating and making some noise in my event, I can put Coker track & field on the map, and show other track & field athletes that you can come to Coker and succeed on the largest stage."

Lott's lowest time of 2:07.99, which came at the Weems Baskin Invitational, is the seventh fastest time in NCAA Division II, earning her a No. 6 seed in the event. She picked up five wins this season in the 800-meter, with her wins coming at the USC Open, South Atlantic Conference Outdoor Championships, Weems Baskin Invitational, Lenoir-Rhyne University Southside Power & Fitness Invitational and the UNCW Seahawk Invitational.

However, Lott isn't worried about her past accolades or the other runners she'll be competing against. "If I worry about my opponents during my race they'll pull ahead of me," said Lott. "I'm going to do what I've done all year, and that's to run my race and focus on what I'm doing."

The championships will be held from May 25-27 at IMG Academy in Bradenton, Fla. Lott is set to compete on Friday (May 26) at approximately 6:05 p.m. in the 800-meter preliminaries. There will be a total of three heats, with the top two finishers in each heat, plus the next two best times advancing to the finals on Saturday (May 27) at approximately 6:55 p.m. Live results and streaming can be found at www.cokercobras.com.
