Women’s Tennis Captures Two Victories at USC Sumter Invitational

SUMTER, S.C. – The Coker College women's tennis team captured two victories at the USC Sumter Invitational Saturday (Feb. 3) afternoon to improve to 2-0 on the season. The Cobras began the day with a dominant 8-1 victory over Benedict. Next, the Navy and Gold defeated Erskine 6-3 for the first time since 2005. 

Suzanna Mickey, Jennifer Mezei, and Jenna Gainey finished undefeated in singles play. Mickey captured a 4-6, 6-4, 10-3 win over her Benedict opponent and a 6-2, 6-3 victory over Erskine at No. 2 singles. Mezei recorded a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Benedict and a 6-0, 6-2 win over Erskine at No. 4 singles. Finally, Gainey earned a 6-0, 6-2 victory over Benedict and a 6-2, 6-2 win over Erskine at No. 6 singles. 

Julia Sorrells and Charlotte Clarke earned one victory each in singles play. 

Against Benedict, the doubles combo of Ruetten/Mickey (No. 1), Sorrells/Mezei (No. 2), and Clarke/Gainey (No. 3) all picked up victories during the match. The doubles tandem of Ruetten/Sorrells (No. 1), Mezei/Mickey (No. 2), and Clarke/Gainey (No. 3) earned victories en route to the Cobras win over Erksine. 

The Cobras will be back in action on Friday (Feb. 9) when the host USC Aiken at 3 p.m.
