Comeback Bid Falls Short at Shaw in Overtime Defeat

RALEIGH, N.C. - The Coker College women's soccer team fell to the Shaw University Bears 3-2 in overtime Tuesday (Sept. 25) afternoon in non-conference action.

Trailing 2-0 at half, the Cobras willed themselves back in the game with a goal from Gaby Sturla in the 63rd minute. Sturla finessed her way through the middle of the Shaw defense and delivered a strike from 20 yards out in the bottom left corner.

Shortly after, the Navy and Gold tied the match at two apiece with an unassisted goal from Meredith Kennedy in the 77th minute. The opportunistic Kennedy took advantage of a deflected cross off the Shaw goalkeeper and buried her shot in the back of the net from five yards out. Shaw went on to score with 35 seconds remaining in the first overtime period for the victory.

As mentioned, Sturla and Kennedy led the Cobras offensively with one goal each. Additionally, Sturla and Kennedy led the Navy and Gold in shots on goal with three each. In goal, Alexandra Brown collected four saves.

The Cobras will be back in action on Saturday (Sept. 29) when they host Queens University at 4:30 PM in South Atlantic Conference play.
