NEWBERRY, S.C.- The Coker wrestling team competed at the Newberry Duals with nine other teams across the NCAA and NAIA. The Cobras took on Queens (NC), St. Cloud State, and Bellarmine on Sunday (Dec. 3). The Navy and Gold earned a 29-13 victory over Queens, suffered a loss against No. 1 St. Cloud State, and came back for a 28-20 win over Bellarmine.
At 184, Jordon Garlow went undefeated in his three matches, all resulting in pins. Versus Queens, it took just over 2:30 for Garlow to earn his first fall of the day. Against Bellarmine, he finished his opponent in 3:50. His fall in 3:45 over St. Cloud State gave the Cobras six points for the Cobras against the top team in the nation.
Bret Shurina earned two victories on the day. Against Bellarmine, at 157, he wrestled to a 17-0 technical fall. At 165 versus Queens, his 16-8 major decision gave the Cobras four needed points.
Luis Peguero also grabbed two wins in his effort. A tight 2-0 decision came over Queens, and a quick pin in 1:27 pin against Bellarmine surged the Cobras to a comeback victory.
Five more Coker wrestlers earned a win at the Newberry Duals. At 133, Diamonte Perry took a 19-3 technical fall over Bellarmine. In the 149 class, Matthew Kieta pinned his Queens opponent in 3:49. Michael Milam won his match over Queens with a fall in 4:13 at 157 pounds. Tyvon Leacock sealed the Navy and Gold victory over Bellarmine with his pin in 2:29. Robert Parland earned a 19-8 major decision over Queens.
The Cobras make their first home appearance of the 2017-18 season when the Lions of Emmanuel College (Ga.) come to town on Friday (Dec. 8). The ECAC match is scheduled to begin at 5:00 p.m.
