PEMBROKE, N.C.- The 2017 Pembroke Classic Wrestling Tournament, hosted by University of North Carolina at Pembroke, saw 18 Cobras compete against the likes of the NCAA, NAIA, and club teams.

In the 141 bracket, John Smith Jr. was given a first round bye and made the most of it in the second round with a quick pin against a St. Andrews opponent in 1:39. In the consolation bracket, Smith earned an 11-7 decision over an unattached wrestler.

Matthew Kieta was also given a bye to start the 149 bracket and picked up an 8-2 decision over St. Andrews.

The 157 weight class had two Cobras earn a victory. Hunter Corwin garnered his 11-8 decision over a fellow Navy and Gold member in the consolation bracket. Kyle Ocker gained his 6-4 decision over a Truett McConnell opponent in the second round of the championship bracket.

Jordon Garlow had three pins on the day. In the second round, he pinned his UNC-Pembroke opponent in 3:40. Next, it took Garlow just over a minute (1:02) to pin an unattached Campbell wrestler in the quarterfinals. Garlow's third fall was the one that earned him a fifth place finish, in 4:10 over another unattached Campbell wrestler.

In the 197 bracket, Luis Peguero earned a 4-0 decision over Duke in the quarterfinals, and in the consolation semifinals, a 7-1 decision over Spartanburg Methodist. The third place win came against the same Duke opponent as his first match, with the same result, a 4-0 decision.

Two Cobras found success in the 285 class with two wins coming from Robert Parland and two from Tyvon Leacock. Parland's victories came back-to-back after his first round bye. He grabbed a 12-6 decision over UNC-Pembroke and earned a 3:00 fall over Campbell. Parland finished in sixth place. Leacock also recorded back-to-back wins within consolation rounds three and four with a 2-1 decision and a 38 second pin over a Truett McConnell opponent.
