Barfield and Garlow Named to Division II All-Academic Wrestling Team

HARTSVILLE, S.C. – The Coker College wrestling team had two members named to the Division II Wrestling Coaches Association All-Academic team for the 2016-17 season, the association announced today. Walker Barfield earned second team honors, while Jordon Garlow was named to the Honorable Mention team.

Walker Barfield earned All-Academic second team honors with an outstanding 4.0 GPA. The senior business administration major finished with a 1-3 record this season and was the only wrestler named to the All-Academic teams who accumulated a 4.0 GPA. Barfield is a native of Lexington, S.C. and is the son of Ben and Julie Barfield.

Jordon Garlow was named to the All-Academic honorable mention team with a 3.10 GPA. The junior business administration major finished the season with a 10-10 record and was second on the team in pins with six. Garlow is a native of Smithfield, Va. and is the son of George and Barbara Garlow.

The 2016-2017 Division II All-Academic Wrestling Team consists of 186 student-athletes from 47 universities and colleges. Thirty-eight members were named to the first team, 62 members to the second team, and 86 were named as honorable mention. In order for a student-athlete to be nominated to the Division II All-Academic Team, he needed to have a minimum 3.00 cumulative grade point average on a 4.0 scale. He must also be in at least his second full year at his school, be a varsity member on his team or a key reserve, demonstrate a degree of skill and have a minimum of two letters of recommendation (academic advisor and coach) submitted on his behalf.
