Coker's Barfield and Taylor Named to Division II All-Academic Wrestling Team

HARTSVILLE, S.C. – Coker College wrestlers Walker Barfield and Jamez Taylor have been named to the Division II All-Academic Wrestling Team as selected by the Division II Coaches Association. Barfield was a second team selection, while Taylor was named to the honorable mention team.

The 2014-2015 Division II All-Academic Wrestling Team consists of 237 student-athletes from 46 universities and colleges.  Thirty-six members were named to the first team, 55 members to the second team, and 143 were named as honorable mention.

Barfield, a sophomore from Lexington, S.C., is a business administration major with a 4.0 GPA. On the mat Barfield was 12-7 this season at the 157-pound weight class. He was the only member of the All-Academic team with a 4.0 GPA.

Walker is the son of Julie and Ben Barfield.

Taylor is a sophomore business administration major with a concentration in sports management. A native of Smyrna, Ga., Taylor has a 3.02 GPA and was 5-7 this season wrestling at the 141-pound weight class.

Jamez is the son of Tamika Taylor and Reggie Smith.

In order for a student-athlete to be nominated to the Division II All-Academic Team, he needed to have a minimum 3.00 cumulative grade point average on a 4.0 scale.  He must also be in at least his second full year at his school, be a varsity member on his team or a key reserve, demonstrate a degree of skill and have a minimum of two letters of recommendation (academic advisor and coach) submitted on his behalf.
