Coker Wrestling Ready for Pembroke Classic

HARTSVILLE, S.C. – On Sunday (Nov. 9) the Cobra wrestling team will hit the road to take part in the 34th Annual Pembroke Classic at UNC Pembroke. The classic is scheduled to begin at 9 a.m. at UNCP's English E. Jones Center.

Featuring wrestlers from over 22 colleges and universities from around the Southeast, the Classic will pit grapplers from several Division I, Division II, NAIA, junior college and club wrestling programs against each other. The Cobras will face some familiar foes, including wrestlers from Anderson, Limestone and UNC Pembroke.

Taking to the mat for the Cobras will be senior Travis Laxton 125-pound division, while sophomore Varlee Velleh will wrestle in the 133-pound division. Representing Coker in the 141-pound division will be sophomores Walker Barfield and RaSean McArthur. A trio of Cobras, junior Rashad Cunningham, sophomore Jamez Taylor and freshman Tristan Sommer will take part in the 149-pound division. Junior Derek Rothermel and freshmen Nick Celella, Kyle Ocker and Russell Ramsey will wrestle at the 157-pound weight class. Junior Derrick Booth and freshman Jordon Garlow will take part of the 165-pound division, while junior Zach Dicus and freshman Rocco Hladney will wrestle in the 174-pound division. The freshmen duo of Andrew Carnes and Luis Peguero will represent the Cobras at the 184-pound division and sophomore Robert Parland will be the lone Cobra at the 197-pound division. Rounding out the Coker wrestlers will be senior Alex Green and sophomore Tyvon Leacock will compete at the 285-pound division.

After taking home the title at the Citadel Open, Laxton will be looking for a repeat performance at the Pembroke Classic, while Rothermel and Parland will also be looking to place in their respective weight classes again this week.
