HARTSVILLE, S.C. – The Coker Cobras picked up a 28-15 win over Belmont Abbey in their final home dual match of the season on Tuesday (Jan. 21) night. The win gives the Cobras a 6-4 record in dual matches this season.

Mikel Nelson got the match started with a thrilling 12-11 come-from-behind victory in the 125-pound division. Nelson found himself behind 7-0 early in the match, but he battled his way back to win the match and give Coker a 3-0 lead.

Charlie Huff, Walker Barfield and Kevin Thompson built on the momentum started by Nelson with back-to-back-to-back pins at the 133-pound, 141-pound and 149-pound divisions. The three pins gave the Cobras a 21-0 lead.

Belmont Abbey bounced back with three decisions and a pin over the next four matches, trimming the Coker lead to just six points, 21-15.

With two matches remaining it was up to Robert Parland and Austin Akins to secure the Coker victory. Parland put the match out of reach with an impressive 4-1 win at the 197-pound division. Akins put the nail in the coffin with a dominating 13-0 major decision at the 285-pound division, giving Coker the 28-15 win.

The Cobras return to the mat on Saturday (Jan. 25) at the Super Region Duals at Newberry College. Coker will take on Tiffin, Shippensburg, Findlay and Indianapolis during the all day event.
