Cobra Wrestling Ready to Take the Mat at Newberry Duals

HARTSVILLE, S.C. – On Saturday (Dec. 7) the Coker wrestling team will hit the road to Newberry College to compete in the Seventh Annual Newberry Duals. The Cobras will take on three tough opponents while at the duals; Alderson-Broaddus College, Darton State College and Lake Erie College. The first dual of the day for the Cobras will be at 10:30 a.m. against Alderson-Broaddus, followed by the dual against Darton College at noon and finally the Cobras will face Lake Erie at 1:30 p.m.

The Cobras are coming off a 25-13 victory over St. Andrews in their inaugural home match on Nov. 25. Gavin Perkins picked up the lone pin of the match for the Cobras in the 125-pound division. Rashad Cunningham earned the largest point differential of the match with a 12-2 major decision in the 141-pound match. Also picking up victories were Charlie Huff at 133, Kevin Thompson at 149, JD Dykes at 157, Robert Parland at 197 and Austin Akins at 285.

Coker's first opponent of the duals will be another first-year program Alderson-Broaddus College. A-B comes into the duals with a record of 1-4. In their most recent match, they fell to Wheeling Jesuit University 28-13.

In their second match of the day the Cobras will take on the Darton State College Cavaliers. This will be just the second dual match of the season for the Cavaliers. They just barely lost their first dual of the season on Dec. 4, 20-19, to Brewton-Parker.

The final dual of the day will pit the Cobras against the regionally ranked No. 7 Storm of Lake Erie. The Strom are coming off a 31-13 win over nationally ranked No. 9 University of Indianapolis.
