McCusker's Record Day Helps Cobras Open SAC Play with 20-12 Rout of Wolves

HARTSVILLE, S.C. – The Coker women's lacrosse team put on a scoring clinic Saturday (Feb. 21) afternoon, as they cruised to a 20-12 South Atlantic Conference win over the Newberry College Wolves. The Cobras improved to 2-1 overall and 1-0 in conference play.

A week after Claudia Jenkins tied the single-game point record; freshman Haley McCusker netted five goals and three assists for eight points of her own and a share of the record. Jenkins would score two goals and hand out one assists for three points, while Danielle Holcomb found the back of the net four times and dished out one helper. Mackenize Baker chipped in three goals and two assists for the Navy and Yellow. Ashlyn Burgett scored two goals on the day and Shannon Jessop scored once and dished out an assist, while Millie Rogers dished out a helper.

Defensively, Marabeth Durden forced three turnovers and picked up five ground balls, to go along with nine draw controls and three goals. Between the pipes, Kaitlyn Vela made seven saves in 60 minutes of play.

Coker would get off to an early start, netting seven goals and only giving up three in the first 30 minutes of play. Coker would dominate the second half opening up a 20-9 lead with two minutes to go. The Wolves would tally three late garbage goals to give Coker a 20-12 victory.

The Cobras will take a weeklong break before heading to North Carolina to face the Queens University of Charlotte Royals on Saturday (Feb. 28). The game is slated for a 1 p.m. start.
