How It Happened:
Anderson started off the first quarter hot, rattling off eight straight points to take an early lead. Coker was able to get it going toward the end of the quarter, trailing 23-18 to close out the first.
Things really picked up in the second quarter, with the Cobras gaining momentum and starting to close the gap. It was a battle that started out with a Thompson lay-up through traffic to close the gap to three. Anderson went on a run to take their largest lead of the night at nine points (31-22) about halfway through the period. They then went on a 9-2 run that started with a Cayanna Stanley three-pointer from the corner and ended with a Kristynn Knight mid-range jumper from the elbow to bring this one within two at 33-31. When the half was all said and done, it was Anderson leading by one at the break, 35-34.
The third quarter was much of the same back-and-forth play, with Anderson holding as much as a five-point lead at some points only for the Cobras to quickly cut it back down to a one or two-point contest. The same could be said about the beginning of the fourth quarter, as good defense by both sides kept it close.
Trailing by two with 8:29 left on the clock, the Cobras sparked a run that pumped energy back into the crowd and onto the court. At that very second, Coker took their first lead of the ballgame on a Wasswa three to make it 59-58. Wasswa then makes a lay-up to extend the lead shortly after, and, in quick succession, Knight gets a steal and pushes it ahead to Mariah Mitchem who hits a huge momentum-shifting three-pointer to take a six-point lead. After a blocked shot by Wasswa turned into a made lay-up by Thompson on the other end, Anderson needed a timeout to talk things over down eight.
The end of the game was nothing short of thrilling, as the Trojans battled it within three and had possession at the end of the contest to make it a tie game and send it to overtime. A wide-open Trojan three clattered out of the rim, and a made free throw on the other end sealed a 70-66 victory for your Coker Women's Basketball team!
