WOMEN'S BASKETBALL PULLS OUT STUNNER AGAINST LOCAL RIVAL
Florence, SC - No better way to open up the season than an edge-of-your-seat contest against your local rival. This time, it was the Cobras coming out on top with a 71-69 victory on the road against the Patriots of Francis Marion.
After a deadlocked half, the Cobras lead 32-31 at the break. At one point in the third quarter, they led FMU by seven at 51-44 before FMU went on a run to close the gap and make it a fantastic finish.
The story gets interesting in the dwindling seconds of the fourth with the Cobras down 69-68. The ball found the hands of Shawnteanna Tillman who came up huge with a driving layup with just fifteen seconds remaining to take the lead at 70-69. After a stop and a made free throw, the Cobras pulled away by the skin of their teeth with a 71-69 victory.
The Cobras were led in points by senior Mya Wasswa with a game-high 21 and 4 steals, with Tillman pitching in 16 points to pace her teammate. Kamari Thompson had a near-double-double with 8 points and 11 rebounds to polish things off.
The Cobras will face a quick turnaround, facing off against #25 UNC Pembroke tomorrow at 1:00 PM ET at Francis Marion.
