Cobras Take Down Flying Fleet in Home Opener on Saturday

HARTSVILLE, S.C. - The Coker University women's basketball team took down Erskine in the 2019-20 home opener by a score of 66-48 on Saturday (Nov. 16). 

Each team had its first bucket in the first two and a half minutes, before the Cobras would find their groove while Erskine would go cold in the frame. A three-pointer from Amanda Cherry put the Cobras ahead 5-2, before Cherry drilled another triple to put the Cobras up by six. Coker would eventually grow its lead to 13-2, before Erskine would counter by coming back within five in the final minute of the quarter. Shay Jackson knocked down the final three-pointer of the quarter with five seconds left, as the Cobras took a 16-8 lead to the second. 

Coker scored the first seven points of the second quarter to extend its lead to 23-8, before Erskine would get back within nine with three minutes to play in the half. Coker would re-gain its double-digit lead and take it to the half, as the Cobras went to the locker room with a 31-16 lead. 

The Cobras would extend their lead to as many as 23 in the third quarter, while holding a double-digit lead for the entire frame. 

 Coker would then extend its lead further in the fourth quarter on its way to the home victory. 

Coker shot 40.7 percent (24-59) from the floor, 37.5 percent (9-24) from downtown and 60.0 percent (9-15) from the foul line in the win. Amanda Cherry and Jordan Ellis each posted a team-high 11 points, while Ashauntee Nelson also contributed 10 points. The day marked a career-high for Ellis. Jalah Horton scored nine points in the game, while Hope Richardson also contributed eight. Saquita Joyner scored six points on the day, while Shay Jackson also had five. Erin Houser and Kaleah Hires each scored three points in the win. Coker out-rebounded Erskine 26-24 in the win, led by seven boards from Jackson. Richardson and Horton each grabbed five rebounds on the day, while Joyner, Houser, Cherry and Christie Zawacki each pulled down three. Nelson, Hires and Ellis each hauled in one rebound in the win. Horton dished out a team-high four assists on the day, while Nelson and Jackson each had three assists in the game. Cherry and Janell Horton each had two assists in the game, while Richardson, Houser and Hires also had one assist each. Richardson and Nelson each had a team-high three steals, while Jackson had two and Joyner, Cherry, Hires, Raya Coley and Zawaxki each had one. Richardson also had the lone block on the day for the Cobras. 

The Cobras (1-1) are back in action on Tuesday (Nov. 19) at the DeLoach Center to entertain Converse College in non-conference action. Tip-off for that contest is slated for 6:00 p.m., with video and live stats available at www.cokercobras.com
