Shay Jackson Powers Cobras to Win Over Mars Hill

HARTSVILLE, S.C. - The Coker College women's basketball team picked up a home South Atlantic Conference victory over Mars Hill 78-70 on Saturday (Feb. 2). 

The Cobras jumped out to an early lead over the Lions and never looked back, and after giong down 3-2 in the early moments of the first quarter they would not trail again. 

Once the Cobras took the lead in the first they rallied off five consecutive baskets to put them out in front 13-3 early in the game, highlited by three-pointers by Elizabeth Kincaid and Haliyah Sumter. The theme of the the first quarter was defense as Coker put the clamps on Mars Hill and only allowed seven points over the quarter and outrebounded the Lions 18-6. Shay Jackson dominated the boards in the first quarter, grabbing four of her total 10 rebounds in the quarter. Jackson continued her hot start in the second by going 3-3 from the field and pulling down three more rebounds. The second quarter saw the Cobras surrender just 10 points as they led 35-17 at the half. Jackson would keep it rolling in the third quarter as she went 3-3 from the field once again, pushing her points total to 16. The Cobras pushed their lead out to as much as 28 late in the third quarter before closing out the game in the fourth quarter, taking the win 78-70.

Jackson led the Cobras with her third double-doublr of the season after going for 16 points and 10 rebounds. Sumter also finished in double fiugres with 13 points after hitting three of her five attempts from long range. Hayley Kropp just missed finshing in double figures once again with nine points, but the junior also posted a game-high five assists. Ashauntee Nelson and Saquita Joyner each notched seven points, while Joyner also grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds and Nelson added four steals. Hope Richardson and Taiylar DeMoss both finished with six points, and Richardson also added six rebounds and three steals in the win. Avahna Baker scored five points, while Kincaid, Erin Houser, and Raya Coley all added three points. 

The Cobras will be back in action on Wednesday (Feb. 6) to take on Queens University in a home South Atlantic Conference showdown at 6:00 PM.
