Cobras Take Down Royals in SAC Play

CHARLOTTE, N.C. - The Coker College women's basketball team picked up a South Atlantic Conference victory on Wednesday (Dec. 19) 76-74 on the road at Queens.

The Cobras were able to come out on top in what was a back and forth game, featuring 14 lead changes and 15 ties throughout the contest. Neither team was able to pull away, with the largest lead by either team being just six point.

Coker went into halftime down by just one and managed to outscore the Royals by three over the final two quarters to pick up the win.

The big story from the game was the outstanding closing performance by Ashauntee Nelson. The freshman out of Durham, North Carolina finished the game with 21 total points, which included recorded 13 points in the fourth quarter and the final six points of the game. With just two minutes to play and the Cobras down by two, Nelson hit a big three to put the Cobras out in front for good and followed it up with a pair of clutch free throws just 30 seconds later.

Nelson led all scorers with 21 points off the bench and also added six rebounds to her stat line. Hayley Kropp also had a nice game with 13 points and five rebounds, while Saquita Joyner notched 11 points and five rebounds. Erin Houser was the fourth Cobra to reach double figures as she had 10 points and six rebounds. Amanda Cherry, Hope Richardson, and Haliyah Sumter all picked up five points, while Shay Jackson and Janell Horton each recorded two points.

The Cobras will be back in action on Saturday (Jan. 5), when the Navy and Gold return to Hartsville for a South Atlantic Conference matchup with Anderson at 2:00 PM.
