HARTSVILLE, S.C. - Coker College head women's basketball coach Shannon Johnson has announced the signing of Avahna Baker, Jalah Horton, and Janell Horton to the 2018-19 roster.
Baker, a native of Florence, S.C., attended Wilson High School where she was a member of the girl's basketball team for the Tigers. On the court, Baker earned the "Tenacious Tiger" award, Coaches award, "Gotta Have Heart" award, and the FSD1 Female Athlete of the Year award. In addition, the 5-4 guard was named to the 4A All-Region team twice. In the classroom, Baker made Honor Roll and was named to the Dean's List. Furthermore, Baker was a member of the Beta Club and National Honors Society.
She is the daughter of Anthony and Vonda Baker. She plans to major in exercise science while attending Coker.
"It is a delight to sign Avahna and keep her close to home for her fans to watch her grow as a player," said Johnson. "Avahna is very discipline on the court and will be a defensive pest to opposing players."
Horton (Jalah) heads to Coker from Myrtle Beach, S.C., where she attended Myrtle Beach High School. While attending Myrtle Beach HS, Horton was a member of the girl's basketball and tennis teams for the Seahawks.
The 5-7 guard is the daughter of Chenise Butler and George Horton. She plans to major in Biology at Coker.
"We are thrilled to sign Jalah along with her twin sister Janell," stated Johnson. "Jalah has a high IQ on the court and will be able to make her teammates better. She can create offense for others and she shoots the three-ball very well."
Horton (Janell) is a native of Myrtle Beach, S.C., where she attended Myrtle Beach High School and competed on the girl's basketball and tennis teams for the Seahawks. On the basketball court, Horton averaged 12 points per game, six rebounds per game, three assists per game, and was named the Player of the Year in class AAAA.
She is the daughter of Chenise Butler and George Horton. The 5-11 guard plans to major in biology at Coker.
"We are very excited about adding Janell to our program," said Johnson. "She's a long and athletic player, and will be able to play multiple positions for us. I'm looking for her to be aggressive offensively and a tough defender."
