HARTSVILLE, S.C. – The Coker College women's basketball team downed the visiting Southern Wesleyan University Warriors in dominating fashion with a 81-47 final on Saturday (Dec. 2) afternoon.
The Cobras struck first when Elizabeth Kincaid sunk a three-ball in the opening ten seconds of the contest for a 3-0 lead. Once they gained their lead, the Cobras would never give up the advantage throughout the rest of the game. Southern Wesleyan battled back in the first frame, evening the game at ten a piece with 5:02 remaining. However, the Cobras responded with a 13-2 run, highlighted by a Caitland Considine three-pointer at the buzzer for a 23-12 lead heading into the second quarter.
During the second frame of action, Coker displayed suffocating defense, holding the Warriors to just 18 percent shooting from the field for a total of six points during the quarter. Back-to-back three balls from Kincaid and Hayley Kropp sent the Cobras on a nine-point run during the second quarter, and the Navy and Gold took a 39-18 lead into the half.
Coker came out of the half with a 7-2 run to take a 46-22 lead with 6:22 remaining in the third quarter. A layup from Janea Williams, three-pointer by Syndey Shull, and jumper from Hannah Stull formed the run. The Cobras continued to hold their impressive lead and took a 26-point advantage into the final frame of play.
In the fourth quarter, the Cobras shot over 70 percent from the field and collected six steals for the 81-47 victory.
Williams lead the Cobras with a double-double, bringing down a season-high 14 rebounds and adding ten points on the offensive end. Kropp led Coker offensively with a team-high 17 points that included a 3-6 mark from beyond the three-point arch. In addition, Kindcaid contributed on the offensive end of the court, knocking down eight points with a 3-4 mark from the field and shooting 2-3 from three-point range.
The Cobras will be back in action on Saturday (Dec. 9) when they travel to Carson-Newman to take on the Eagles in South Atlantic Conference action. Opening tip is set for 2 p.m.
