Cobras Drop Conference Matchup with Bears

HARTSVILLE, S.C. – The Coker College women's basketball team dropped a South Atlantic Conference game 79-68 to the visiting Lenoir-Rhyne University Bears Wednesday (Nov. 29) evening. 

The Cobras tallied the first points of the contest and pulled out to a 4-0 lead early in the first quarter thanks to a layup from Janea Williams and a jump shot from Caitland Considine. Coker continued to hold their lead in the first frame of play and headed into the second quarter with a slim 16-15 advantage. 

Lenoir-Rhyne controlled the second frame of the contest and took a 36-31 lead into the locker rooms. However, the Navy and Gold responded by outscoring the Bears in the third quarter 22-19. With a little over a minute left in the third frame, the Cobras recorded five consecutive points to tie the game at 53. Williams started the run with a layup, and free throws from Erin Houser and Iresha Cooper capped off the scoring streak. 

Lenoir-Rhyne went on to outscore Coker in the fourth quarter and take the contest by a 79-68 final.

Cooper led the way for the Navy and Gold, pouring in a season-high 20 points with a 8-9 mark from the field. Williams contributed 15 points and led the Cobras on the boards with a team-high 11 rebounds. 

The Cobras will be back in action on Saturday (Dec. 2) when they host Southern Wesleyan at 2 p.m. in the DeLoach Center at Dan Schmotzer Court.
