Cobras Prevail Over Broncos in Non-Conference Battle

HARTSVILLE, S.C. – The Coker College women's basketball team prevailed over the visiting Fayetteville State University Broncos Saturday (Nov. 18) afternoon 56-51 in a non-conference battle. The Cobras evened their record at 2-2 with the victory.

In the opening frame of play, the Cobras used a five-point run to extend their lead to 12-5 over the Broncos. Erin Houser began the run with a layup, followed by a layup from Hayley Kroop and a free throw by Shay Jackson. The Navy and Gold held their lead and finished the first quarter with a 15-10 advantage.

After competitive second and third quarters, the Broncos took a 39-37 lead heading into the final frame of the game. Much like most of the game, Coker and Fayetteville State exchanged scores and were knotted up 51-51 with 35 seconds remaining. With the game on the line, the Cobras rose to the occasion and finished the game on a five-point run for the 56-51 victory.

Free throws from Janea Williams and Hannah Stull brought the Coker lead to 54-51. Next, the Broncos stormed down the court looking to tie the game with less than 20 seconds remaining. However, Kaleah Hires hustled for a clutch steal and Stull iced the game by draining two free throws after drawing a foul.

Williams led the way for the Navy and Gold, pouring in 14 points on 6-8 shooting. In addition, Williams led the Cobras in rebounds, bringing down eight. Iresha Cooper chipped in 11 points and added five rebounds, while Kropp finished with nine points and three steals off the bench.

The Cobras will return to the court when they travel to Belmont Abbey on Tuesday (Nov. 21) for a 5:30 p.m. game against the Crusaders.
