Late Layup Pushes Catawba Passed Coker

SALISBURY, N.C. – The Coker women's basketball team lost a tough 47-44 competition to Catawba on Monday (Feb. 17) at the Goodman Gymnasium.  With the loss the Cobras fall to 11-11 on the year and 9-9 in the South Atlantic Conference.

The Cobras had a slight 24-23 lead at the half, and the tight battle would continue late into the final seconds.  With under a minute remaining Coker held a 44-43 lead after a Priscilla Fenty layup.  Catawba would then call a timeout with just 50 seconds remaining.  Out of the timeout the Indians would run the clock to just 20 seconds and score a layup to take the lead.  On the ensuing play Coker committed a costly turnover that forced them to foul and send Catawba to the free throw line.  The Indians would take a three-point lead after connecting on two free throws, and force Coker into a desperation three that did not fall.

Fenty would lead the team in scoring after netting 19 points.  The junior also snagged down eight rebounds, while collecting two steals and one block.  Jessica Cohen tallied a double-double after scoring 11 points and securing 12 rebounds.

Coker will look to recover this Wednesday (Feb. 19), as they prepare to host Wingate in a SAC clash.  Tip-off is scheduled for 6:00 p.m., followed by the men's game at 8:00.
