Coker Tops UNCP 58-54

PEMBROKE, N.C.- The Coker women's basketball team pulled out a 58-54 win over the Braves of UNC Pembroke on Thursday (Nov. 14) night at the English E. Jones Center.  With the win Coker improves to 2-0 on the year, while Pembroke falls to 0-2.

The Cobras got off to a slow start in the first half, and found themselves down 16-5 in the first 12 minutes of play.  Coker however, earned six quick points after Patricia Sullivan connected from deep to pull within eight points.  Priscilla Fenty then cut the Pembroke lead to just four after an old fashioned three point play.

Coker's offensive attack continued to click in the last ten minutes of the first half, and the Cobras were able to take a slight 28-25 lead into the locker room.

The game remained tight in the second half, as both teams exchanged points back and fourth.  With five minutes remaining in regulation, Terrika Foster hit back-to-back trifectas to keep the scoreboard in favor of the Cobras.

UNCP kept the pressure on and battled back to within one point with just one minute remaining in regulation.  The solid free throw shooting of the Cobras would eventually doom the Braves, as Coker went 9-of-10 from the line in the last three minutes of the game.

Hailey Yohn led the Cobras in scoring with 12 points on the night.  Yohn also had three steals, three assists and one block.  Jessica Cohen was next in scoring for Coker with 11, while Foster and Priscilla Fenty had nine each.  Fenty also collected nine rebounds in the game.

Coker will continue their road quest as they travel to Newberry on Wednesday (Nov. 20) for their first South Atlantic Conference game of the year.  Game time is slated for a 6:00 p.m. start time.
