Coker Softball Splits Doubleheader with North Greenville

HARTSVILLE, S.C. - The Coker University softball team split its doubleheader of the season against North Greenville University on Monday (Feb. 8), winning the first game 6-3 and losing the second game 13-3 in six innings.

Game 1

North Greenville would jump out ahead early off of a sacrifice fly by Jenna Hewes, and neither team would scratch across a run again until the fourth. Ava Jay's two-RBI single in the fourth sparked the Cobras offense to give Coker the 2-1 lead, followed up by an RBI double from Lauren DeWitt to score Jay. The offensive explosion didn't stop there, as Jessica McWhorter would plate DeWitt with an RBI double to left field to give the Cobras the 4-1 advantage. North Greenville would go on to score two more runs in the top of the fifth, before being held scoreless for the remainder of the game. Kelsi Scott would add an insurance run for the Cobras in the bottom of the sixth with an RBI triple left center, scoring Kelsey Gollie to bring the game to its final score.

Scott posted a 4-4 day with one RBI in the game, while five other Cobras posted hits in the game. Jay drove in two runs in the game, while Mikayla Cuthbertson, DeWitt and McWhorter each drove in one run. Hannah Fisher (2-0) earned the win, allowing three runs on seven hits in five innings while walking and striking out two apiece. Jordyn Goodman picked up her second save of the season, allowing one hit and one walk along with one strikeout over two innings.

Game 2

Coker came out strong in the beginning of the game, opening the scoring on a RBI single from Kayla Oswell that scored Caitlin Wray. Oswell would add to the Cobras lead with a two-RBI double in the fourth to score Kayla Hawkins and Madison King. North Greenville would tie the game on one swing from Claire Gilmore, as she tied the game with a three-run homer in the top of the fifth. The Crusaders would open the game up offensively in the sixth inning, on their way to the run-rule victory.

Cuthbertson, Hawkins, Wray and Bailey Douglas each recorded one hit apiece.

The Cobras hit the road next Wednesday (Feb. 17) for a non-conference doubleheader at UNC Pembroke. First pitch is set for 2:00 p.m., with video and live stats available at www.cokercobras.com.
