HARTSVILLE, S.C. -- The Coker College softball team improved to a perfect 6-0 record on the season with a doubleheader sweep of USC Aiken on Sunday (Feb. 10).
Game 1
The Cobras utilized an all Goodman family battery in game one, with freshman pitcher Jordyn Goodman in the circle, and her sister, junior catcher Hannah Goodman behind the plate. Jordyn Goodman picked up the first victory of her collegiate career, pitching four innings of shutout softball, while striking out three batters.
The game was scoreless heading into the bottom of the third inning when Madison King scored on an Anna Gluhosky triple. The Cobras added a run in the fourth inning when King scored again, this time on a throwing error by the USC Aiken third baseman to give the Cobras a 2-0 lead.
Coker broke the game open in the fifth when Hannah Goodman singled in a run, pinch-runner Alex Alverson scored on a wild pitch, and Morgan Richardson doubled in two more runs to give the Cobras a 6-0 lead.
Christine Carver came on in relief of Goodman in the fifth inning, earning a save in three innings of scoreless work. She allowed just one hit, and struck out five batters.
Game 2
Freshman pitcher Isabelle Mullen ran her streak to 16 innings straight of not allowing an earned run, pitching five innings of shutout softball to start the game for the Cobras. Mullen allowed just two hits while striking out five on her way to her team-leading third win.
The Cobras didn't wait long to give Mullen a lead; Ashley Meckley homered in the top of the first to give Coker an early 1-0 advantage. Chloe Pelham followed with a single, scoring King and increasing the lead to 2-0 after the first inning.
Coker struck again in the fourth when Allyson High singled in Meckley and Gluhosky to go ahead 4-0. King started the fifth inning with a double, stole third base, and then scored on a groundout by Mindy North to add the fifth and final run.
Taylor Forehand pitched two innings of scoreless relief, allowing one hit and striking out one batter.
The Cobras have now outscored their opponents by a total of 24-4 in their first six games. Coker has not allowed more than one run in any game this season, and they've only committed two errors all season.
