HARROGATE, Tenn.- The Coker College softball team (33-15, 12-8 SAC) ended their regular season on the road at South Atlantic Conference opponent Lincoln Memorial on Saturday, April 21. The teams took a game a piece with the Cobras winning game one 5-1 and the Railsplitters with game two 2-1 (8).
Game One
Lincoln Memorial was held scoreless until the seventh, while the Cobras piled on five runs in the early stages for the win.
Coker's scoring came in the first three innings to earn the win. In the first, Anna Gluhosky led off the game with a single up the middle, Katelyn Chambers had a successful sacrifice bunt to move Gluhosky to second. Maria Williamson singled to left center to get the first run on the board.
In the second, Hannah Price started the inning with a double to left center. Mindy North squared up for a single up the middle, advancing to second on the throw, moving Price to third. Courtney Boan hit a two RBI single to the shortstop, with North and Price crossing home for two more runs.
Chambers was the leadoff batter in the third and singled to the shortstop. Allyson High crushed a home run over the left center wall for a two-run shot, her first of the season. This game the Cobras a 5-0 lead.
The lone Railsplitter run was a solo homer to center field in the bottom of the seventh.
Game Two
Each team scored a run in the fifth and the winning run crossed the plate in the bottom of the eight for the Railsplitters
Madison King stepped into the box for a single to the right side. She then stole second and advanced to third on an error by the catcher. King scored when Gluhosky reached on a fielder's choice in the top of the fifth.
Lincoln Memorial tied it up on a RBI double to left center in the bottom half of the inning.
Coker had the chance to take the lead in the top of the eighth. Boan was placed on second (due to the international tiebreaker rule). Williamson sacrificed bunted her over to third, but Price hit into a double play, with Boan out at the plate.
The game was decided in the eighth with the player placed on second, moved to third on a single, and ran in on a sacrifice fly.
The Navy and Gold have clinched the second seed in the SAC tournament to be played at Anderson University (S.C.) Friday and Saturday (April 27-28). Coker will take on the No. 7 seed (determined later today) at 3:00 p.m. on Friday.
