Cobras Host Third Annual Spring Tournament

HARTSVILLE, S.C.- Coker College will host the third annual Coker Spring Softball Tournament on Saturday and Sunday (Feb. 24-25) at Byerly Park in Hartsville, featuring eight teams, including the hosting Cobras. Each team will play four games apiece with two a day.

The participants are: Coker, Lees-McRae, Bloomsburg, King (Tenn.), Shepherd, Fairmont St., Charleston (W.Va.), and West Va. Tech.

The Navy and Gold are perfect through 12 games in 2018, having scored 93 runs and hitting seven home runs. The team is batting .349, has an on-base percentage of .432, and is slugging .498 percent. Christine Carver (6-0, 0.91 ERA)  is coming off of a double-header series at Claflin in which she threw a perfect game with 11 strikeouts, and followed it up with a save in the second game. Maria Williamson heads up the offense attack, hitting .581 with 25 hits, 20 RBI, 10 runs, three doubles, and four home runs. Anna Gluhosky, Makayla Shore, and Cacey Simmons have combined to add three home runs for the Cobras. Simmons and Gluhosky are also responsible for the triples the team has hit. Kelsi Bachmann has the team-highs of 14 runs scored, six stolen bases, and 11 walks.

Coker will take on Fairmont St., Lees-McRae, Shepherd, and King (Tenn.) in the tournament. The Fighting Falcons will be opening their season in Hartsville this weekend. The Bobcats are entering the weekend at 3-9, while the Rams will be playing their first game in 2018. The Tornado have played six games thus far and are 1-5.

On Saturday, games will begin at 10:00 a.m. on fields six and eight, while on Sunday, the action gets started at 9:00 a.m. on fields five, six, and eight.

Tickets for the day are $5 for adults, $3 for students with ID and children 12 & under, and free to all Coker faculty, staff, and students with ID. Only cash will be accepted at the gate.
