Cobras Cruise Past Royals in Midweek SAC Doubleheader

HARTSVILLE, S.C. – The Coker College softball team (25-9, 2-2 SAC) picked up a pair of 6-1 wins over the visiting Queens University of Charlotte Royals on Wednesday (Mar. 22) in a South Atlantic Conference doubleheader.

In game one, Queens found the scoreboard in the top of the first inning to take a 1-0 lead. A RBI groundout by Allyson High and a RBI single by Riley Morris in the bottom of the second inning put the Cobras ahead 2-1 after two innings. With two outs in the fourth inning, Anna Gluhosky doubled to left field, scoring Morris and putting the Cobras ahead 3-1. The inning was not over, as Kelsi Bachmann singled, scoring Hannah Goodman and Gluhosky to lift Coker ahead 5-1. After being hit by a pitch and swiping second, Cacey Simmons scored on a Maria Williamson RBI double to put Coker ahead 6-1. Queens went down quietly in the sixth and seventh inning to give the Navy and Gold the 6-1 win in game one.

Morris and Bachmann each finished with two hits and one RBI. Williamson, High and Gluhosky each went 1-for-3 with an RBI as well.

In the circle, Nikki Linthicum (5-2) earned her fifth win of the season. She allowed one earned run on four hits in four innings. Christine Carver picked up her first save of the season, allowing no hits in three innings of relief.

In game two, it was Coker that struck first, scoring two runs in the bottom of the first inning, thanks to a RBI double by Williamson and a RBI single by Hannah Price. Williamson was not done there as she led off the third inning with a solo home run to put Coker ahead 3-0. A sac bunt by Simmons in the fourth scored Mindy North and gave Coker a 4-0 lead. Riley Morris picked up where she left off in game one, belting a two-run home run in the bottom of the fifth, extending the lead to 6-0. Queens scored in the sixth, but it would not be enough as Coker secured the 6-1 win in game two and the SAC doubleheader sweep.

Williamson and North finished 2-for-3, with Williamson scoring two runs and plating two RBI. Morris also finished with two RBI, going 1-for-3 at the plate. Simmons and Price also went 1-for-3 with an RBI to round things out for the Cobras.

Taylor Forehand improved to 5-1 on the season. She allowed two hits and no runs in five innings, while striking out six batters.

The Cobras will be back in action on Saturday at 1 and 3 p.m. to face the visiting Lincoln Memorial University Railsplitters.
