HARTSVILLE, S.C. – The Coker College softball team picked up a pair of midweek wins on Wednesday (Mar. 8) over the visiting Lees-McRae College Bobcats. The Cobras won the opening game by a score of 6-2 and then took game two by a score of 12-1 in five innings.
The Cobras scored four runs in the first inning, thanks to a pair of base hits by Maria Williamson and Allyson High. A RBI single by Tayler Barcomb in the second inning added another run and gave the Cobras a 5-0 lead after two innings. Lee-McRae responded with a run in the top of the third inning to close the gap to 5-1. After a scoreless fourth and fifth inning, the Bobcats scored another run in the top of the sixth to trim the deficit to 5-2. A Lees-McRae error in the bottom of the sixth allowed Coker to score another run, expanding its lead to 6-2. The Bobcats went down in order in the seventh, leading to Coker picking up the 6-2 win in game one.
Barcomb had the lone multi-hit game for the Cobras, going 2-for-3 at the dish. High drove in two RBI, while Hannah Price, Williamson and Barcomb also drove in runs.
Augusta Jackson moved to 4-1 on the season with the win. She allowed no earned runs on two hits in four innings.
Game two started out much slower, with neither side scoring a run through the first two and a half innings. However, the Coker bats erupted for 12 runs in the bottom of the third inning to give the Cobras a 12-0 lead. After a leadoff walk, Hannah Goodman came all the way around to score on a throwing error after Kelsi Bachmann's bunt single. Cacey Simmons doubled to center field to score Bachmann, then Williamson homered to put Coker ahead 4-0. After a double by Barcomb and a hit by pitch, High singled through the left side to score Barcomb. Anna Gluhosky reached on a fielder's choice, scoring Hannah Price, which was followed by a two-RBI single by Hannah Goodman. Simmons appeared at the dish again, slashing her second RBI double of the inning, this time scoring Goodman and Gluhosky. With runners on second and third, Barcomb picked up her second base hit of the inning, singling up the middle and plating two runs to cap off the 12-run inning. Lee-McRae scored one run in the fifth, but it would not be enough as Coker cruised to a 12-1 win.
Bachmann, Simmons, Barcomb and High all had multi-hit games, while Simmons also plated three RBI. Williamson. Barcomb and Goodman all drove in two runs, while High also plated a run.
Tabitha Allen picked up her sixth win of the season. She allowed two hits in two scoreless innings.
The Cobras will be back in action tomorrow (Mar. 9) to take on North Greenville University in a non-conference doubleheader.
