CENTRAL, S.C. – The Coker College softball team picked up a pair of non-conference road wins on Saturday (Feb. 4) over the Southern Wesleyan University Warriors. Coker won game one by a score of 9-2, then turned around to win game two 7-2.
In game one, it was Coker striking first, as a RBI groundout by Courtney Boan scored Hannah Goodman and gave the Cobras the 1-0 advantage. SWU responded with a run in third to tie the game up 1-1. The Navy and Gold broke the tie in the fifth, as Boan reached on an error scoring a run and Kelsi Bachmann grounded out to the pitcher, scoring another run. Coker added two insurance runs in the sixth, thanks to a solo home run by Maria Williamson and a RBI single by Augusta Jackson. Coker added four more runs in the seventh to clinch the 9-2 win the opener.
Goodman finished with three hits, Williamson, Tayler Barcomb and Mindy North finished with two hits and Bachmann, Jackson, Riley Morris and Hannah Price all recorded one hit.
Taylor Forehand (1-0) picked up the win, allowing one earned one in 5.1 innings of work.
In game two, neither side scored in the first three innings. It was Coker breaking 0-0 score in the top of the fourth inning, as back-to-back doubles by Barcomb and Morris gave the Cobras a 1-0 lead. Barcomb would come around and score on a passed ball to extend the lead to 2-0. Coker added two more runs in the fifth inning to take a 4-0 lead. Three insurance runs in the seventh inning secured the 7-2 win and the two-game road sweep.
Barcomb finished game two going 3-for-3 with three doubles and three RBIs. Price and Morris finished with two hits, while Williamson, Allyson High, Breana Ard and Nikki Linthicum all collected one hits as well.
Christine Carver (1-0) picked up her first collegiate win, tossing five scoreless innings and scattering six hits.
The Cobras will be back in action on Thursday (Feb. 9) when they welcome Augusta University for the 2017 home opener. Game times are set for 1 and 3 p.m.
