Cobras Earn Walk-off Win, Tie in Twinbill with Braves

HARTSVILLE, S.C.- Coker softball earned a walkoff 7-5 win in game one before darkness overtook the 8-8 game two contest and called for a tie.

The Cobras trailed 4-1 after two and a half before Coker took a one-run lead with a four-run third. The bats for both teams would be silent until the fifth when UNC Pembroke scraped across a run to tie the game at five.  The game would remain knotted going to the home team's last at-bat. Allyson High smacked a one-out double to put herself in scoring position for Augusta Jackson. High would advance to third via passed ball, and watch the freshman belt one high over the wall to give the Cobras the walk-off win. Jackson (1-0) would also pick up the win in the game, firing two innings in relief allowing one earned run on two hits. The young gun walked two and punched out one in her relief effort.

Game two would have a similar start to it, with Coker falling behind 7-1 after three innings.  The Braves would tack on one more in the top of the fourth, putting their lead at 8-1. The Coker bats would not go quietly, as the home team erupted for five runs in their half of the fifth. RBI singles from Maria Williamson and Carley Bailey as well as a two-run single from Hannah Price helped keep the Cobras alive. The Cobras would tack on one more in the sixth to cut the deficit to one heading to their final chance. Carley Bailey reached on an error to get Coker a leadoff baserunner. Makayla Shore would sacrifice Bailey over to second, before a Hannah Price groundout would get her to third with just one out. That set the table for Mindy North to tie the game up for the navy and gold. The freshman would do just that, slapping a single into the 5-6 hole to knot the game at 8-8. Unfortunately, that is where things would end as the game had to be called for darkness.

The Cobras will hit the field again this weekend (Feb. 13-14) when they host Southern Wesleyan and USC Aiken in non-conference doubleheaders. First pitch for both days is set for 1:00 p.m. at Saleeby-Stokes Field. Tickets for the game are $5 for adults, $3 for students and free to all Coker faculty, staff and students.
