Cobras and Royals Split SAC Doubleheader

HARTSVILLE, S.C. – The Coker College softball team went 1-1 on Wednesday (Mar. 25) in their South Atlantic Conference doubleheader against the visiting Queens University of Charlotte Royals. Queens would take game one 5-2. The Cobras turned around to take game two 2-1.

In game one, multi-run third and sixth innings would be all the Royals needed to take the three-run victory. The Coker offense was led by Katelyn Szupello who went 2-for-3 with a run. Ashley Gallman plated an RBI while going 1-for-2. Jill Lewis also picked up a hit and Tayler Barcomb had the other RBI.

Game two was a pitcher's duel. The Cobras would strike first in the top of the fifth inning after an RBI single by Corrine Stiles put them ahead 1-0. The Royals would respond with a run of their own in the top of the seventh inning giving Coker one last chance the break the 1-1 tie before extra innings. With the bases loaded and one out Gallman slashed a game-winning single into center field giving the Navy and Yellow the 2-1 walk-off win.

Tabitha Allen was tagged with the loss in game one. She gave up four earned runs on five hits in seven innings of work. Brittany Long was awarded the win in game two. She gave up one run on three hits in seven innings.

The Cobras will have a quick turnaround as they travel to Belmont Abbey Thursday (Mar. 26) for non-conference doubleheader against the Crusaders. First pitch is set for 2 p.m.
