Cobras and Crusaders Split Wednesday Doubleheader

HARTSVILLE, S.C. – The Coker College softball team went 1-1 on Wednesday in a non-conference doubleheader against the North Greenville University Crusaders. The Crusaders took a tightly contested game one, 3-2, but the Cobras responded with a 5-1 victory in game two.

Game one was a pitcher's duel through the first five innings with neither team able to plate a run. That changed in the top of the sixth when the Crusaders plated three runs. The Coker offense was quick to respond. After singles by Carley Bailey and Tayler Barcomb, Ashlee Ellen scored them both with a two-run double to left field. Coker was unable to take advantage of a bases loaded situation in the bottom half of the seventh and would drop game one 3-2.

Ellen went 1-for-2 in game one with two RBIs. Bailey picked up a pair of hits, while Riley Morris went 1-for-3.

In game two, the Navy and Yellow scored two runs in the fourth inning and three runs in the sixth inning to pick up the 5-1 victory. A pair of doubles by Ashley Gallman and Tyresha Ellis in the fourth fueled the two-run inning. After another double by Gallman, Barcomb stepped in a cranked a two-run home run to give Coker the 4-1 lead. Not to be outdone, Ellis also hit a solo homerun later in the inning sealing the 5-1 victory.

Gallman, Barcomb and Ellis all had multi-hit games in game two. Gallman went a perfect 3-for-3 with two runs scored. Barcomb was also perfect from the plate, going 2-for-2 with two RBIs, while Ellis went 2-for-3 with two RBIs

Tabitha Allen (4-6) suffered the lost in game one. She threw a complete game, gave up six hits and three runs and fanned six batters. Brittany Long (3-1) also went all seven innings in the game two victory. She gave up one run on four hits and struck out three.

The Cobras will go on a six-game road trip starting Saturday (Mar. 7) as they travel to UNC Pembroke for a doubleheader.
