Weatherford Cracks Three Homeruns, as Cobras Split with Royals

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Coker softball team split a South Atlantic Conference doubleheader with Queens University of Charlotte on Wednesday (Mar. 26), at Park Road Park.  The Navy and Yellow now sit at 14-14 on the year.

Coker pushed a run across early in game number one to lead 1-0 at the end of the first.  They would then go on to score two runs in the final three innings, to capture the 7-4 win.

Sydney Weatherford had a monster game for the Cobras after going 2-for-3 at the plate, with a home run and a double.  Katelyn Szupello and Tyresha Ellis each had two RBIs, while Weatherford and Carley Bailey each added one.

Lauren Phillips (7-6) would get the nod and the win in game number one, after pitching seven innings and only allowing four runs on 13 hits, with three strikeouts.

In game number two, Queens jumped out to a 4-0 lead after the first, but Coker responded with six runs in the top of the second.  The two teams would exchange runs late into the game, but eventually the Royals would edge out the Cobras by a slight 11-9 margin.

The hot bat from Weatherford continued in game number two, as she collected her second and third homerun of the day along with tallying six more RBIs.  Logan Cox joined the club with a homerun of her own, while collecting an RBI with two runs scored.  Szupello and Megan Strickland also added an RBI to the scoreboard.

Cox (1-4) would be tabbed with the loss, after giving up five runs on eight hits in 5.0 innings of work.
