Coker Softball Splits DH with St. Andrews

LAURINBURG, N.C. – The Coker softball team split a doubleheader against St. Andrews on Sunday (Mar. 2).  The Cobras now sit at 8-7 on the year.

Game one was a come from behind win for the Navy and Yellow, after they fell down 2-0 in the third inning but took the lead after a three run fifth inning.  Coker then added two more runs in the top of the seventh, but the Knights would battle back to tie the game at 5-5 and force extra innings.  In the top of the eighth, Coker would tack on two more runs, and then hold the home team to just one run to secure a tight 7-6 victory.

Katelyn Szupello was the offensive leader in game one for Coker as she went 2-for-3 at the plate with two RBI.  Logan Cox collected two RBI, and went 1-for-3 with one run scored.

On the bump, Lauren Phillips would grab the win after pitching eight innings and fanning four batters.

Coker got off to a quick start in game number two after scoring two runs in the first, one run in the second, and another in the top of the fifth.  St. Andrews would then take a 5-4 lead after scoring five runs in the fifth and sixth, but Coker would force extra innings yet again by scoring the game tying run in the seventh.  Coker however could not complete the comeback, as the Knights would go onto score two runs in the bottom of the ninth to preserve a 7-6 win.

Sydney Weatherford went 2-for-4 at the plate in game two, with two runs scored and two RBI.  Suttle was also an impact in the batters box, as she went 3-for-4 with one run scored.

Tabitha Allen would be marked with the loss, after pitching 0.1 innings and giving up three runs on three hits with one strikeout.

Coker will continue to play on the road, as they travel to Barton on Saturday (Mar. 8) in a nonconference doubleheader.  Game time is set for 1:00 and 3:00 p.m.
