Cobras Give One, Take One in DH Against UNCP

HARTSVILLE, S.C. – The Coker softball team split a nonconference doubleheader with UNC Pembroke on Saturday (Feb. 22), at the Saleeby-Stokes field.

The Cobras trailed 2-0 in the early innings of game number one as they struggled to produce base runners.  Pembroke then increased their lead to 7-0 after scoring five runs in the sixth inning.  Coker would eventually get their bats going, and respond with 3 runs in the bottom of the sixth.  The seventh inning was scoreless for both teams however, and the Braves would come out on top by a score of 7-3.

Sydney Weatherford, Ashley Gallman, and Stacy Burr led the Navy and Yellow offensively in game one as they each recorded an RBI.  Tyresha Ellis had the big bat for Coker as she recorded the teams only double.

Lauren Phillips (2-4) would get the loss after pitching a complete game and giving up seven runs off of 12 hits.

In game number two it was Coker who struck first after Burr sent one flying over the center field fence for a homerun.  Ashlee Ellen would eventually draw a walk later in the inning, and reap the rewards of a run scored after a double from Tayler Barcomb.  Coker's defense would then take care of the rest by shutting out the visiting team for the remaining seven innings to preserve the 2-0 win.

Jessica Koumas (1-0) would get the win after allowing only two hits and no runs in seven innings of work.

Coker will be back in action on Friday (Feb. 28) as they host Belmont Abbey in a nonconference doubleheader.  Game number one is slated for a 1:00 p.m. start time followed by game two at 3:00.
