Coker Splits Day One at Hampton Jordan Classic

ORANGEBURG, S.C. – The Coker softball team started their 2014 season with one win and one loss on Friday (Feb. 9) at the Hampton Jordan Classic.

Game one featured a tough 8-0 loss to USC Aiken, in five innings.  Coker struggled at the plate with only one batter reaching base by way of a walk, but could not collect any hits as India Kornegay preserved the shutout no-hitter for USC Aiken.

Lauren Phillips (0-1) would be charged with the loss, after giving up four hits and four runs.

Despite a slow offensive start in game one, Coker's bats came alive in game two as the Navy and Yellow cruised to a convincing 13-2 win over Clark Atlanta.  Tayler Barcomb and Katelyn Szupello both went 2-for-3 from the plate with two runs scored, with Szupello collecting a double along the way.  Stacy Burr also went 2-for-3 from the plate with a home run and three RBIs, while Logan Cox chipped in two runs after going 2-for-2 from the batters box.

Phillips (1-1) would get the win in game number two after fanning two batters and only giving up six hits with no walks.

Coker will face South Carolina State, St. Augustine's, and Benedict tomorrow to finish the tournament, with the earliest game beginning at 9:00 a.m.
