Cobras and Yellow Jackets Split Softball Doubleheader

HARTSVILLE, S.C. – Katelyn Szupello's (Port Orange, Fla.) two out single in the bottom of the seventh drove home Stacy Burr (Darlington, S.C.) and gave the Cobra softball team a 4-3 win over West Virginia State on Monday afternoon. Coker split their two game set with the Yellow Jackets winning game two 4-3 and losing game one 7-3.

GAME ONE

In game one the Cobras struggled to get any offensive production, while the Yellow Jackets took advantage of some timely hitting in order to take home the win.

Jordan Atkinson (Bishopville, S.C.) (0-2) was slated with the loss. She went four innings allowing five runs on nine hits.

Bryant McLendon (Lake City, S.C.) made her collegiate debut at the plate a memorable one by belting a solo home run in her very first at bat. She finished the game 1-for-2 with an RBI and a run scored. Sydney Weatherford (Scranton, S.C.) was 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI and Jaclin Poole (Clover, S.C.) had a pair of hits in the opening game.

GAME TWO

In the second game of the day, the Cobras scattered 10 hits and scored four runs on their way victory. Coker opened the game with a pair of runs in the first inning and added another in the fourth, taking a 3-1 lead. The Cobras held that lead until the Yellow Jackets pushed a pair of runs across in the top of the seventh to tie the game at three. Then it was Szupello's two-out single that brought in the winning run in the bottom half of the inning.

Becky Dillon (West Palm Beach, Fla.) (2-3) got the win with just two-thirds of an inning of relief work. She did not allow a hit and had a strikeout. Coker's starter Logan Cox (Georgetown, S.C.) scattered 10 hits in 6.1 innings of work, allowing three runs. She showed great poise and confidence on the mound as she worked her way out of three bases loaded jams during the game.

Clarissa Suttle (Piedmont, S.C.) was the leading hitter in game two, going 3-for-4 with an RBI, a run scored and two stolen bases. Gina Easler (Edgefield, S.C.) had a pair of hits and Szupello was 1-for-3 with an RBI.

The Cobras will be back at home on Saturday when they open Conference Carolinas play against Belmont Abbey College with a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m.
