Coker's Hanna Joins 700 Win Club

HARTSVILLE, S.C. – Coker head softball coach David Hanna captured his 700th career victory by leading the Cobras to a 9-0 win over Mars Hill College on Friday afternoon. The win came in the second game of the doubleheader between the Cobras and the Lions. 

GAME ONE

In game one the Mars Hill Lions jumped out to an early 4-1 lead after the first inning. Coker cut the lead to just one with a pair of runs in the fourth off a home run by Stacy Burr (Darlington, S.C.). Mars Hill answered with three runs in the top of the fifth to make it 7-3. Both teams exchanged runs in the seventh for a final score of 8-4.

Coker's Jordan Atkinson (Bishopville, S.C.) (0-1) took the loss allowing four runs on five hits with three strikeouts in four innings of work.

Burr was the Cobras leading hitter with a homer, two RBIs and a run scored, while Gina Easler (Edgefield, S.C) had a pair of hits and Sarah Rountree (Plantation, Fla.) drove in a run.

GAME TWO

Game two belonged to the Cobras, as they scored nine unanswered runs in just five innings. Coker held a 5-0 lead heading into the fourth inning when Burr gave the Cobras a four run boost with a grand slam home run. Coker shut the door on the Lions in the top of the fifth, giving the Cobras a five inning mercy rule win, while also giving Coach Hanna his 700th career victory.

Freshman Katie Lee (Debary, Fla.) (1-0) earned the shutout victory. She went five innings allowing just three hits with three strikeouts.

Burr finished the game with a pair of hits, including the homer, with four RBIs and a run scored. Jaclin Poole (Clover, S.C.) also had a pair of hits with an RBI and a run scored. Katelyn Szupello (Port Orange, Fla.) had a double with an RBI and Sydney Weatherford (Scranton, S.C.) also drove in a run.

The Cobras return to the diamond for another non-conference doubleheader on Saturday at home against Wingate University. First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.

Burr had a pair of home runs for the day, including a grand slam.

The McDonald's Player of the Game is presented by the Hartsville McDonald's and is given to the most outstanding performer during each Coker College home athletic event.
