HARTSVILLE, S.C.- The Coker College men's volleyball team (11-8) faced the Royals from Queens University of Charlotte on Tuesday (Mar. 27) night. The Cobras fought to the finish, winning 3-2 (21-25, 25-23, 25-15, 20-25, 19-17). This marks the fifth win out of the last six for Coker.
The fifth set was a battle in and of itself, going past the winning number of 15. It took the Navy and Gold to reach 19 in order to defeat Queens (N.C.). The Cobras were down 17-16 before Coach Julia Rowland called a timeout to settle the team. The Royals returned with a service error. Gary Baker served two beauties, leading to kills from Joao Victor Santos and Stephen Porras for the three-point swing in the home team's favor. Coker faced a loss on three separate occasions but came out victorious.
Santos led the offensive attack, once again, with 19 kills. Porras and Gabriel Castro followed suit with 16 and 14, respectively. Aleksa Bijelic offered up 40 assists. Baker (5) and Castro (2) were responsible for the remaining seven. Santos (5) and Bijelic (1) served up Coker's six aces. Three Cobras reached the 10-dig precipice: Baker, Porras, and Santos. Every Cobra was a part of the defensive stand, combining for 14 blocks, led by Parker Oldham's four block assists.
The Navy and Gold travel for one more regular season roadtrip, taking on the Alderson Broaddus Battlers in their second matchup of the season. First serve in West Virginia is scheduled for Saturday, March 31 at 3:00 p.m.
