Cobras Cruise Past Knights in Season Opener

HARTSVILLE, S.C. – The Coker College men's volleyball team cruised past the Knights of St. Andrews University with a 3-0 (25-22, 25-13, 25-18) sweep Tuesday (Jan. 17) evening.

The first set of the match was the most competitive with the Cobras prevailing over the Knights 25-22. Coker held a slim 17-16 advantage when three-straight points gave the Cobras some breathing room with a 20-17 lead. The three points were strung together by a kill from Artur Cabral, a service ace by Luca Berger, and an attack error committed by St. Andrews.

Coker would hold their lead and Gabriel Castro tacked on the final point of the set off of a well-placed kill.

Unlike the first set, the second and third sets were dominated by the Cobras. A four-point scoring streak towards the end of the second set blew the frame open with the Cobras holding a comfortable 19-9 advantage. Kills from Joao Victor Santos and Artur Cabral highlighted the four-point scoring streak. The Cobras went on to win the second set 25-13.

In the third set of play, the Cobras wasted little time to pull away from the Knights. Coker held a 24-13 lead before St. Andrews stormed back with five-straight points to narrow the score to 24-18. However, Artur Cabral crushed any hopes of a comeback with a powerful kill for the set and match victory.

Offensively, Artur Cabral collected 13 kills and accumulated an impressive .429 attack percentage to lead the Cobras. Joao Victor Santos had a solid night on the offensive end as well with 12 kills.

The Cobras improved to 1-0 on the season with the victory and will be back in action on Friday (Jan. 20) when they travel to Belmont Abbey to take on the Crusaders at 7 p.m.
