Cobras Drop Two on Day One of Coker Volleyball Tournament

HARTSVILLE, S.C – The Coker men's volleyball team went 0-2 Saturday (Mar. 1) on day one of the Coker Volleyball Tournament. The Cobras dropped matches 3-1 to Lees-McRae College and 3-0 to Erskine College.

In game one, the Navy and Yellow were able to take set one 25-18, but would drop the next three sets to the Bobcats 25-14, 25-23 and 25-20, respectively.

Leading Coker in game one was Luke Hansen with 15 kills and five digs, while Artur Cabral knocked home 14 kills and served up for aces. Devion Whetstone registered three blocks to lead the Cobras defensively and Ricardo Ferrer's game-high 37 assists help set the Coker attack.

Game two belonged to the Flying Fleet early on as they took sets one and two convincingly 25-16 and 25-14, respectively. However, Coker would make a comeback in the third as they managed to open up a 23-19 lead late in the third set. Unforced errors by the Cobras and timely hitting by Erskine would give the Fleet the 25-23 win in the set and the 3-0 match sweep.

Hansen and Jared Geizer led Coker offensively in game two with seven kills apiece. Cabral finished with six kills and three more service aces on the day. Ferrer handed out 21 assists, while Dustin Penn-Henry had seven digs to lead the Navy and Yellow defensively.

Coker will be back on the court tomorrow (Mar. 2) for day two of the Coker Volleyball Tournament when they take on Sacred Heart University at 12 p.m., followed by Pfeiffer University at 4 p.m.
