Men’s Tennis Stacks Up Victories in Day One of FMU Invitational

FLORENCE, S.C. - The Coker College men's tennis team began fall competition by stacking up victories during day one of the FMU Invitational. Hunter Horton and Melwin Krall advanced to the semifinals in flight A singles, while Justus Lehmann, Isaac MacMillan, Max Sturgess, and Pablo Gonzalo-Saul recorded singles victories. Additionally, the tandems of Sturgess/Krall, MacMillan/Gonzalo-Saul, and Horton/Lehmann picked up doubles victories.

Horton began flight A singles action with a default victory and won his round two match 6-2, 7-6(4) over Charlie Hutchins of Francis Marion. On the other side of the bracket, Krall advanced to the semifinals with a 6-1, 2-6 (10-6) win over Paul Meuwissen of Francis Marion and a 3-6, 6-3, 10-8 victory over Patrick Oliviera of Augusta.

In flight B singles, Lehmann tallied a 6-1, 6-4 win over Matt Astell of Francis Marion and MacMillan picked up a 6-3, 6-4 victory over Alex Sklizovic of USCA. After suffering a round one loss, Sturgess battled back for a 6-3, 6-4 victory over Matheo Espinoza of Francis Marion in the consolation quarterfinals. The Navy and Gold wrapped up singles action with two victories from Gonzalo-Saul in flight C singles. Gonzalo-Saul defeated Avery WIlliamson of Francis Marion 6-3, 6-4 and Matheus Mendes from Augusta 4-6, 6-3 (10-2).

The duo of Horton/Lehmann opened up flight A doubles action with a loss, but battled back for a 6-3 win over Rubio/Bolle of Augusta in the consolations. In flight B doubles, the tandem of Krall/Sturgess finished undefeated with a 6-4 victory over Sumer/Addison of Wingate and a 6-4 win over Astell/Sweeney of Francis Marion.

The Cobras will wrap up the FMU Invitational tomorrow (Sept. 23) beginning at 9 AM.
