Men’s Tennis Shuts Out Johnson C. Smith in Non-Conference Action

CHARLOTTE, N.C. - The Coker College men's tennis team shut out the Johnson C. Smith Golden Bulls 9-0 Thursday (Feb. 22) afternoon in non-conference action. The Cobras improved to 5-2 on the season with the victory.

The Navy and Gold started the match by sweeping doubles play. The duo of Mark Watt and Henrik Hellbe picked up an 8-3 victory at No. 1 doubles to improve to 4-3. At No. 2 doubles, the tandem of Hunter Horton and Justus Lehman smothered their Golden Bull opponents 8-0, improving to an impressive 6-1 in doubles action. Next, Felix Schweyer and Dominic Allan picked up an 8-2 win at No. 3 doubles.

Coker rode their momentum from doubles play into singles by sweeping the competition once again. Watt earned a 6-0, 6-2 victory at the No. 1 slot, while Horton recorded a 6-2, 6-3 win at No. 2 singles. Schweyer tallied a 6-2, 6-1 victory at No. 3 singles and Hellbe cruised to a 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 4 singles. Finally, Allan recorded a 6-0, 6-1 victory at No. 5 singles and Lehman picked up a 6-1, 6-0 win at the No. 6 slot.

With this afternoon's victory, Watt leads the Cobras with a 6-1 record in singles play. In addition, Schweyer, Lehman, and Horton all improved to 5-2 in singles action.

The Cobras will be back in action on Sunday (Feb. 25) when they travel to Francis Marion to take on the Patriots at 12 p.m.
