Cobras Named ITA All-Academic Team; Six Players Earned ITA Scholar-Athlete Accolade

HARTSVILLE, S.C. – The Coker College men's tennis team has been named an Intercollegiate Tennis Association All-Academic Team, the association announced today. Also, six players from the 2015-16 roster were named ITA Scholar-Athletes.

More than 4,200 scholar-athletes were recognized across all divisions, along with over 700 all-academic teams. In all, the ITA recognized 60 Division II men's teams as All-Academic teams.

The ITA All-Academic Team award is open to any ITA program that has a cumulative team grade point average of 3.20 or above (on a 4.00 scale). All varsity letter winners should be factored into the cumulative team GPA for the current academic year (including fall 2015 and spring 2016).

As a unit, the Coker men's tennis team collected a 3.73 GPA during the 2015-16 academic year. On the court, the Navy and Gold finished the season with eight wins, including a 6-5 South Atlantic Conference record and a trip to the SAC Championship Tournament.

Simon Bergbom, Henrik Hellbe, William Marrafao, Felix Schweyer, Tom Sizeland and Mark Watt were all named ITA Scholar-Athletes.

"The guys are so deserving of this excellent achievement," said head men's and women's tennis coach Bill Simpson. "They put in the hours on the court, but they also put in those extra hours in library studying and enabling them to be the model of what a great Coker and NCAA student-athlete is."

In order to earn ITA Scholar-Athlete status a player must meet the following criteria: 1.) Be a varsity letter winner, 2.) Have a grade point average of at least 3.50 (on a 4.00 scale) for the current academic year, and 3.) Have been enrolled at their present school for at least 2 semesters (including freshman through senior year).

Bergbom, a rising junior from Stockholm, Sweden, earned a 3.82 GPA during the 2015-16 academic year. On the court, he finished with a 7-11 record and a 6-5 SAC record.

He is the son of Pernilla Anglered and Kenneth Bergbom. He is a political science major.

Hellbe is also a rising junior from Stockholm, Sweden. He finished the 2015-16 year with a 4.0 GPA. He compiled six wins in singles this season, including four in SAC play.

He is the son of Lisa and Torbjorn Hellbe. He is a business major.

Marrafao, who graduated on May 14, 2016 with a Bachelor of Science degree in computer science, finished his senior year with a 4.0 GPA. On the court, he totaled six wins at No. 1 singles and earned All-SAC honors.

He is the son of Marlene and Claudinei Marrafao and is from Jundial, Sao Paulo.

Schweyer is a rising junior from Bavaria, Germany. He finished with a 4.0 GPA during the 2015-16 academic year. On the court, he collected an 8-10 overall record and a 6-4 record in SAC play.

He is the son of Angelika Littich-Schweyer and Jakob Schwyer. He is a business major.

Sizeland, who graduated on May 14, 2016 with a Bachelor of Science degree in biology with a pre-medicine concentration, earned a 4.0 GPA during the 2015-16 academic year. He was named to the CoSIDA All-District first team, CoSIDA Academic All-America team and was named the 2015-16 South Atlantic Conference Man of the Year. On the court, he compiled a 17-3 overall record and a 10-1 mark in SAC play. He earned All-SAC first team honors for this singles play and second team honors for his doubles play.

Tom is the son of Wilma and Peter Sizeland and is from Hamilton, New Zealand.

Watt, a rising junior from Glasgow, Scotland, finished the 2015-16 academic year with a 3.71 GPA. On the court, he captured nine wins in singles play and 13 win in doubles. He also earned All-SAC honors in doubles.

He is the son of Colette and Mark. He is a business major.
