No. 33 Coker Opens SAC Championship with Newberry

HARTSVILLE, S.C. – The No. 33 nationally ranked Coker men's tennis team will square off with the Newberry College Wolves in the quarterfinals of the 2014 Food Lion South Atlantic Conference Men's Tennis Championship on Wednesday (Apr. 16).

The No. 3 seeded Cobras enter the match with a 10-7 overall record and 9-2 mark in SAC competition. Sophomores Andre Staab and Tom Sizeland have been the driving force behind the Cobras success. Staab, the No. 22 nationally ranked singles player according to the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA), has compiled a 13-3 overall record at No. 1 singles and a 10-1 record in conference play. Not to be outdone, Sizeland used a 13-match winning streak to propel him to a 14-2 overall record and 10-1 conference mark at No. 2 singles. Martin Moncayo has also had a stellar season for the Navy and Yellow, going 12-4 overall and 10-1 in conference at the No. 5 singles spot. William Marrafao and James Corfield each went 9-2 against conference opponents and sport 11-5 and 10-6 overall records at No. 3 and No. 4 singles, respectively.

The sixth-seeded Wolves (9-11, 6-5 SAC) enter the match having lost their last two matches. Vinicius Bothelho leads Newberry with a 16-4 overall record at No. 1/No. 2 singles. Coker defeated the Wolves 9-0 in their first meeting of the season back on Apr. 1.

The Cobras and the Wolves will square off at 1 p.m. at the Rock Hill Tennis Center in Rock Hill, S.C. The winner will advance to play in the semifinals on Thursday (Apr. 17) against No. 2 seed Tusculum College. Live coverage of the match can be found at www.cokercobras.com
